![]() To others, it is the sole reason to play on a private server. Yes, lightsaber included.įor some players the customized content is simply a bonus. Many private servers remove the levelling grind, many have completely custom events and areas and others raise the level cap and introduce their own classes.įor example, World of Warcraft servers exist which allow players to fly in Azeroth and there is a Ragnarok Private server which includes the ‘Jedi’ class. Almost anything can be tweaked, modified, added or removed. ![]() Most private servers allow you to download the game client so you don’t even need to pay for that.Īnother benefit is the customisation of a private server. You can have as many accounts as you like without paying a cent. The primary benefit to playing on a private server is usually the financial bonus. Aion Online, released in 2009, has an emulator released and several private servers already exist. Private servers are still being developed for recent games. Older private servers for games like Ultima Online and Ragnarok Online have existed, with an active player base, for several years. Ultima Online now has many private servers, known as ‘Free Shards’, with enough customized content to rival the retail servers. An open source tool was released which allowed players to play without connecting to the Ultima Online server.įrom this tool, several private server emulators spawned. The first widely acknowledged private server appeared for Ultima Online, while the retail version was still in beta. In fact, the original code was considered so poor server emulator developers improved on it with their own code. The server code was leaked and used to host private servers. The biggest case of this was AEGIS from Ragnarok Online. In some situations private servers used leaked code from the retail servers. It is not an overnight job but most private server emulators are released as open source tools. How Is a Private Server Made?Ī private server emulator is created by reverse engineering the data stream between the retail client and server. At the same time, they have been criticised for poor performance and low player population. Private servers have gained their player base by being free to play and through content customisation. It allows users to login and play as they would on a normal retail server. Essentially, a private server emulates the functions of a normal MMO server. But are they legal? And what is the benefit of playing on a private server?Ī private server is the common name for a server emulator. Today many of the latest games, including World of Warcraft, are available on free to play private servers. It's a different experience.Back when MMO games began to grow in popularity, MMO gamers became jealous of a single player gamers ability to pirate their games. The F2P servers will give you a bad taste. It's worth at least 1 month sub to try it out. But the F2P servers are garbo, and use a different version of EQ2 which in agreement sort of sucks compared to the TLE. unfortunately the TLE servers require a subscription. *** Edited to say please play on a TLE server, they are higher population, you can find people at all levels. Also a shit ton of race/class combinations you can make. A ton of utility skills, a lot of fluff skills, but also there are some fun skills/spells too. Each class is like playing 2 pianos at once. ![]() It's a little clunky, and by level 50 or 60+ (the cap atm is 120 I think), you'll have almost 40 to 50 'active' skills to use for your class. ![]() The game just has a massive amount of content and is overlooked. They are mostly not instanced as well, so you'll see other groups inside too - they are so large, some of them, that many groups can share a single dungeon. They can go hours long from start to finish with a full group, with puzzles and quests along the way. The game has EASILY over 200 dungeons, and they aren't like WoW 5-10 minute runs. But, higher level characters do get bonuses for grouping/playing with lower levels, and they all have a ton of alts. So it's pretty empty world up to the end game. Unfortunately, there's no real way to 'speed up' to shorten the leveling gap (there are some boosts I think). This game currently has SEVENTEEN expansions, and a shit-ton of content. The end game areas are just packed with people hanging out and chatting more like a social game. Steam charts aren't the most accurate since many of the long time players use the launcher.
